One afternoon in 1993, I was driving down 14th Street NW and I saw a woman feeding pigeons in front of a church. I pulled the car over, ran across the street, and the birds took flight forming a circle that looked like a halo around her. Today, I’m sure she was an woman without permanent housing being supported by N Street Village around the corner. We spent some time together and she agreed to an impromptu photo shoot where she led me around, showing me her park and the birds that she knew by name. I asked her if my taking her photo was okay; she not only said yes, she posed for me in different areas and blessed me that I would live a long life. She also told me not to pose in front of a gravestone.

I found out many, many years later that this was a photo by Annie Adjchavanich from, I think, when she was a student at the Corcoran. She wheat-pasted the image on structures around town. I need to ask her about this. Stand by…

I would go on to work at Border’s book store from 1996-1997, but I believe this is from a series on L Street NW that I did by intention. I prepped everything and went out to wander around D.C., before I lived or worked there. This may also have been when I lived there. Born in DC at Columbia Hospital for Women, I was grew up all over Prince Georges County and went to college in St. Mary’s, the furthest Southern point of Maryland. I moved to the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of DC in 1996 where I lived until 2018.
